Road Trip by the Numbers

Remember when you were little and you had to play games in the car to channel your limitless energy or stay occupied so your parents would not go crazy? I was a huge state license plate finder – always trying to find that Hawaii, Alaska or Montana plate. Much like that, during our road trip I made a tally of things I saw to keep me from driving Matt crazy by reverting to singing all the show tunes on my iPod.

So here they are:

Miles traveled: 2,489
Days: 6
Nights: 5, in PA, IL, SD, WY and MT.
States/Districts passed through: DC, MD, WV, PA, OH, IN, IL, IA, SD, WY, MT.
Bucks spent on gas: $708.76 – ouch, dragging a car and all you belongings can be a drag on your wallet.
Bunnies (possible vampires as were only spotted at night): 6
Wind turbines: 379
Deer: 267 – this includes Antelope, regular lady deer, bucks and rocks in the distance that looked like deer.
Fake lawn deer: 31
Jackalopes: 2 (worth googling)
Tolls paid: $0!!!
Bison: 78
Emergency naps: 1
Bags of candy: 3.5 – Smarties, Sour Patch Kids, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and beef jerky (that’s considered candy out here).
Prairie Dogs: 44, worlds most adorable varmints.

Looking back it was a great trip, something everyone should do once and only once, trust me.

When we rolled into town the real hard work began….unpacking, fitting all my junk into a wee home and fixing all the little things that go wrong with a 1940’s bungalow that may not have been updated since then.

Box City 2.0

We have re-papered all of the cabinets, re-styled the grandma fans, re-placed the dirty blinds and re-planted everything in the raised bed gardens (I have the sunburn and broken back to prove it). I took before and after pics of all my little projects and will post them tomorrow.

There is much to be done, but I think I will go get a glass of wine, sit on the front porch and watch the sky turn pink and a thunderstorm roll in. Night!
